The son of an architect, Garret grew up around blueprints and drafting tables. And while he didn't follow in his father's footsteps, he didn't stray far either.
A Foundation in Design and Construction
Prior to law school, Garret worked as a lobbyist in Sacramento and later Washington, D.C. where he represented the design profession and construction industry before the California state legislature, Congress and executive bodies including the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
A Focus on Construction
Since then, Garret's practice has focused almost exclusively on design and construction. He has represented parties in involved in nearly every aspect of design and construction including owners, developers, architects, engineers, contractors, subcontractors, material suppliers, equipment lessors, sureties and insurers.
He has worked on significant projects in California and outside the state, from iconic landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge to the shiniest new additions to the San Francisco skyline like the Salesforce Tower. His project-specific experience extends from project formation through project closeout including contractor licensing, contract drafting and negotiations, bid protests and subcontractor substitutions, mechanics liens, stop payment notices and other design and construction payment remedies, and defect, delay and acceleration claims.
He has been recognized as a Super Lawyer in the area of construction litigation by Thompson Reuters, a distinction reserved for no more than 5% of attorneys in a given practice area, and is a Charter Fellow of the Construction Lawyers Society of America, an invitation-only national fellowship of construction lawyers.
A Counselor and Advocate
While Garret's practice focuses on design and construction, his broad experience, diligence, and willingness to take a case to trial when necessary, has made him the attorney of choice for clients with other types of disputes including those involving real estate, business contracts and other issues.
